A Clear Guide to Council Funding for Care in Northamptonshire

Understanding how to get financial support for care is often the most stressful part of the process. The system is complex, but we’re here to help. This guide explains the process for residents of both West Northamptonshire and North Northamptonshire, helping you understand the steps to getting a care assessment and potential funding from your local council.

The Two Key Steps to Getting Support

The Care Needs Assessment

This is always the first step and it has nothing to do with your finances. A professional from the council’s adult social care team will talk to you and your loved one to understand their daily needs (e.g., washing, cooking, safety). Everyone is entitled to a free care needs assessment, regardless of their income.

The Financial Assessment (Means Test)

If the care needs assessment shows that support is required, the council will then conduct a financial assessment. This looks at your income, savings, and assets to determine how much, if anything, you will need to contribute towards the cost of your care. The value of your home is not included in this test for home care.

Which Council Do You Contact?

Since 2021, Northamptonshire has been served by two separate councils. You must contact the correct one based on where your loved one lives.

West Northamptonshire Council

Northampton, Daventry, Brackley, Towcester, and surrounding areas.

North Northamptonshire Council

Kettering, Corby, Wellingborough, Rushden, and surrounding areas.

Will You Need to Pay for Your Care?

In England, there are national thresholds (which change annually) that determine if you get funding. The figures below are for illustration.

Above £23,250 (Self-Funding)

If your capital and savings are over this amount, you will be considered a ‘self-funder’ and will be responsible for the full cost of your care.

Between £14,250 – £23,250
(Partial Funding)

You will likely receive partial funding from the council but will be expected to contribute towards the cost from your income and savings.

Below £14,250 (Full Funding)

You should receive the maximum funding support from the council, although you will still contribute most of your eligible income (like pensions).
